How to teach so and such, enough, too many and too much

These little words – some adverbs, some determiners, sometimes pronouns and generally very useful – now have four lessons dedicated to them on Off2Class, in our Adjectives and Adverbs Category.

We know that you’ll enjoy teaching these to your Pre-Intermediate students.

So and such, enough, not enough, too many and too much!

A5.3 – So-and-such – 1
In this lesson, we cover the main difference between so and such, in that so is used before adjectives and nouns, as in so hot and so cold, while such is used in front of a noun or noun phrase. Students need only to look for the existence – or non-existence – of a noun, to really determine how to use these words, and we provide ample exercises to practice so and such.

A5.4 – So-and-such-So that-Such-as – 2
This lesson builds on the knowledge learned in the previous lesson, offering practice of so and such. Additionally, we look at so… that and such… that to show cause and effect, a commonly used structure in everyday English. Finally, we look at how English uses such as to introduce examples.
A5.5 – Enough-and-Not-enough – 1
Students learn how to use enough with adjectives, adverbs, nouns and verbs. We also show how enough is used as a pronoun. Finally, we show how enough of and not enough of are used with determiners + noun phrases or with pronouns.

A5.6 – Enough-More-than-enough-Too-Too-many-Too-much – 2
Here we introduce more than enough when a quantity or amount is larger than what is needed or desirable. Afterward, we show structures with too and how it is used to convey a negative sense. We compare usage of too with more than enough. Finally, we introduce too much, too many, too few and too little with nouns… not forgetting too much to modify a verb.

These lessons will provide ample opportunity to practice these oft-used and handy terms. As always, each lesson comes with a Homework Activity, aollowing the student to build on knowledge learned in class.
