Teaching Phrasal Verbs – Free Presentation

Recently we conducted a Webinar titled “Teaching Phrasal Verbs”.

The webinar was so popular that we decided to release the presentation for FREE Download. You can find a recording of the webinar here.

In the Webinar presentation we cover the basics of how to teach phrasal verbs to your students. This area of English grammar is obviously steeped in controversy, so we decided to share the strategies that have worked with our own private ESL students. We have a series of 32 lessons covering phrasal verbs that you can find on our Teacher Tab.
First, we covered a quick review of the three main groups of multiword verbs:

  • Phrasal Verbs (e.g. look up, call off, run into, take off)
  • Prepositional Verbs (e.g. decide on, apply for, stand for, depend on)
  • Phrasal Prepositional Verbs (e.g. put up with, look forward to, run up against)

Secondly, we covered some of the main grammatical terms:

  • Transitive or intransitive (take a direct object / do not take a direct object)
  • Separable or inseparable (can be separated by a direct object / never appears separated)

We then discussed the importance of a good dictionary for teaching phrasal verbs. Phrasal verbs come after the main verb in the dictionary and use a notation structure to show whether they are separable or inseparable and whether they are transitive or intransitive.
We finalized by discussing some of the resources that you can find on Off2Class to help you teach phrasal verbs. Our 32 lessons cover the following (and are perfect for teachers that haven’t tackled teaching phrasal verbs with their students before):

  • Separable Transitive Phrasal Verbs (PV1.2 to PV1.4)
  • Inseparable Transitive Phrasal Verbs (PV1.5 and PV1.6)
  • Permanently Separated Transitive Phrasal Verbs (PV1.7 and PV1.8)
  • Intransitive Phrasal Verbs (PV.1.8 and PV1.9)
  • Prepositional Verbs (PV2.1 and PV2.2)
  • Phrasal Prepositional Verbs (PV3.1 and PV3.2)

We hope that you enjoy downloading our Teaching Phrasal Verbs presentation and of course, let us know if you’re able to use some of teaching strategies or resources in your own lessons. Remember, you can watch a recording of our phrasal verbs webinar.
