A communicative approach
.
I believe that if you aren’t having fun, you aren’t learning! Language learning shouldn’t be stressful. Rather, it should be a relaxed activity that you can enjoy.
I use holistic & communicative methodologies.
First, the holistic language method:
- Views language as a whole, something that is not divisible.
- Teach the language the way native children learn their 1st language
- Focuses on all the parts of English you need to know to communicate effectively.
- Learn language in context (Ex. phrases & expressions are learned with a dialogue, not isolated lists or grammar exercises)
- Pronunciation (Phonetics and Phonology) are not taught separately, but rather in a culture or a context. (Ex. “Fantastic” can be said because you are irritated, or because you are extremely happy –>context is just as important as basic pronunciation).
Next, the communicative method:
- Emphasizes interaction as both the means and the ultimate goal of learning English.
- When we communicate in English there is a function that is being completed, for example, to:
- get things
- control behavior
- create interaction with others
- express personal feelings
- learn
- create a world of imagination
- communicate information (cf Halliday 1975)
The communicative method concentrates on how we USE the language. This is so important because the idea is we need English to complete some sort of function or transaction. So, how are these functions expressed in English (which may be different from your 1st language)? This makes classes more dynamic because we actually USE the language and interact with it. We DON’T just read it, memorize it, and complete grammar sheets.
Also, I take into account your needs and how you will use English. Will you be speaking with non-native English speakers? Will you need to communicate with only native speakers of English? How much will you need to speak? or will communication be written? How much technical language will you need? etc.

About me
.
I fell in love with languages at a very young age. I was born in Romania and had attended German kindergarten. My grandma was the only person in my family who spoke German and I loved to have this secret code to communicate with her.
At age six, I immigrated to Canada with my family and I learned to speak English and French. I understood that communicating with other people is an ability we often take for granted. I watched my parents find their way through a new culture and a new language, which made me realize how important speaking another language is.
I’ve always enjoyed learning new languages, which is why I attended university to study French. However, I finished graduating from McMaster University with an Honours BA in Philosophy and a Minor in Health Studies. After my undergrad, I got a job working with children in a French daycare, practicing and teaching French. This is when I became fascinated with how we acquire our first and second languages. I liked working with children, but it wasn’t enough for me. So, I decided to go back to school and get my Post-Graduate TESOL Certification at Humber College. I have been teaching ever since and it has become my passion to try and help others communicate in English.
A few years later, I moved to Argentina. Just last year I completed all my coursework for Applied Linguistics for English teacher’s Master’s offered by the National University of Rio Cuarto.
I love what I do and I love learning different way to offer my students a better language experience.
So, I can’t wait to hear from you, and tell you what I can do to help you reach your English goals. What are you waiting for? Start learning English with me today!
