About You

.

I teach two groups of students:

1. Teenagers who have had some English at school but would like to perform better on tests and assignments and actually have the chance to use the language outside of the classroom. We work step by step to ensure that the student has a solid foundation in speaking, listening and reading and then we introduce writing tasks and reading comprehension.
2. Working professionals. These include people in IT, finance, research and even some members of parliament. These students are looking to improve their English for work, get a better job, or prepare to go overseas.

My approach

.

Classe are fun but focused.

For teenagers, I use a a comprehensive lesson library complete with reading passages, role plays, listening exercises and grammar/vocabulary practice. There is also homework which I review and go through with the student. Of course I do like to keep it fun so I add a variety of games and additional speaking activities.

For working professionals, students are typically given lessons to preview. I give study tips so that students can work outside of class and use class time to focus on speaking and listening. During class we’ll see the language in real context before looking at rules and definitions. Then, there is often a combination of practice exercises, comprehension questions and the opportunity to practice the target language freely using more realistic speaking situations. I give homework for out of class practice and we continuously review the language previously learned.

What you can expect

Once students book a trial they will be asked to complete a placement test. We can use this to see the student’s level and weaker areas which need to be improved. From there we discuss goals and needs and I make a learning plan. To make learning more efficient, I encourage them to study outside of class time so I provide extra study tips. During class, we focus on speaking. Classes are fun but focused.

About me

.

I am from Canada and have taught ESL for around 20 years. I currently live in Amsterdam. I’ve also worked as a professional touring DJ and ran my own events and talent agency. These days, aside from teaching, I enjoy rock climbing, playing guitar, and hanging out with my daughter. I am a goal oriented person and I love to help other people achieve their goals.
