The Mystery of Easter Island Lesson Plan

Easter Island, also known as Rui Napa, is one of the most isolated islands in the world. It is located in the Pacific Ocean and covered with 887 giant statues. For years, scientists have wondered where these statues came from and where the people who built them went! That is why it is such an intriguing topic to cover in class with ESL students. When to teach this Easter Island lesson plan

This is a reading lesson for intermediate students. Essentially this means that they can comfortably read predictable texts and answer basic questions about them. It should be noted that there are more complex vocabulary words introduced in this lesson. So be sure to review it before using it with your student(s).

How to teach this lesson 

This lesson starts with a simple warm-up where you can ask your students) to identify different land formations. From here you can work with them by using the question prompts provided. The pictures provided should provide context and also spark conversation. Upon completion of the warm-up, reading activities can be introduced. You will notice that besides the texts there are different vocabulary words defined. If your students are having trouble understanding the meaning of them, you can look up supplementary pictures online. 

As your student(s) continues to read, be sure to ask questions about the text which they are reading. You can access pre-written questions and teacher notes by downloading a free Off2Class account. The teacher notes are so useful and will amplify the way you teach this Easter Island lesson plan. In addition to this, the teacher notes contain answer keys and exciting information about the history of Easter Island. 

At the end of the lesson, you can ask your student(s) to answer questions from their perspective. You can get creative here by eliciting more information from them based on their answers. Also, it’s a great time to share your own, culturally-sensitive opinions.
