“My Apartment”: A Free Speaking Lesson Plan Download

Let’s face it, the past year has been a difficult one for many teachers across the globe. This is why Off2Class continues to release free lessons for teachers everywhere to use and share. This lesson is fun, factual and great for virtual or in-person classrooms. This speaking  lesson plan download titled “My Apartment” is the perfect addition to your lesson library. Keep reading to find out what to expect in this lesson and how to teach it.

When should this lesson be used?

“My Apartment” is a speaking lesson plan download designed to use with pre-intermediate students. Prior to using this speaking lesson plan download, I suggest you introduce your students to vocabulary that describes typical features of a city and apartment. This lesson should be used with students that are familiar with the present simple tense. By the end of the lesson a student should be able to use the present simple to talk about an apartment.

What does this speaking lesson plan download include and what are the best ways to teach it?

This download contains 18 slides with a countless array of informative images. The first 10 slides (excluding the title slides) contain 5 sets of images. In each set,  the first slide provides images only and the second provides the same images with suggested vocabulary. We recommend that for each set, you encourage the student to talk about each image and then offer vocabulary. It’s important that you focus on speaking with the student(s). Student(s) do not need to memorize the vocabulary immediately. Instead the images are a means to encourage your student. This is especially effective when the student is actively encouraged by his/her/their teacher.

In it, you will also encounter a reading activity that covers the span of three slides. It contains vocabulary words learned prior slides. I find this is useful for students to gain understanding of how these words are used in different contexts. When you reach this portion of the lesson, make sure you give your student(s) the chance to self-pace. This is a great time to ask your student(s) questions about the text as well!

You can download the lesson plan here:

This speaking lesson plan download ends with several question prompts. Throughout the lesson, you should ask the student(s) these questions and allow them to share answers. This will prepare them for delivering a narrative, which is the very last activity  to be encountered in this lesson. To do this effectively I find it best to let the student(s) speak freely without interruptions or questions. After they have concluded you can also ask them to retell the story.

In any case, it is very useful to download a free Off2Class account so that you can gain access to  the Teacher Notes that accompany each slide. They will give you even more information on how to teach this lesson.
