International Women’s Day – ESL Lesson Plan

International Women’s Day is an ESL lesson plan that teaches your students about Women’s Day, a global holiday celebrated annually on March 8th each year. 

In recent years, the world’s thoughts about women and equality have changed a lot. Women have taken significant steps towards equality, but there are still things to fight for.

When should you teach this ESL lesson on International Women’s Day?

International Women’s Day (CEFR: B1+) is an ESL lesson plan download aimed at students with intermediate proficiency levels. Though the holiday is celebrated on March 8th, you can teach this lesson any time of year to celebrate the contributions made to society by inspirational women from all walks of life!

How should you teach this ESL lesson on International Women’s Day?

This ESL speaking lesson aims to introduce vocabulary to discuss Women’s Day and provide speaking practice.

All the vocabulary introduced in this lesson is related to the achievements of women and women’s issues: equality, gender, the right, inspire, vote, brave… When introducing these phrases, remember to refer to the related images to provide context clues.

The lesson will also introduce students to influential women throughout history, such as Marie Curie, Malala Yousafzai, and Susan B. Anthony.

This lesson includes plenty of reading texts and opportunities for discussion and practice. Encourage students to give longer answers with examples and reasons.

Finally, this lesson ends with a prompt for students to describe an inspirational woman in their lives.
