Teaching Lessons

How do I teach in-person?

Using multiple devices: Your students can join your lessons and interact with the content from their own device. When you launch a lesson be sure to Enroll your students. When your students log in to Off2Class they’ll be prompted to ‘Join Lesson’ – green button in the top left of their panel. When they press this button they’ll get taken into your lesson:

teaching lessonsslide2-formatted

Using a single device: For a one-2-one lesson you can physically share your laptop or tablet with your student and use it as the focal point of the lesson. For a classroom lesson, you can project your laptop or tablet using a projector, TV screen or Smartboard. Once you’re sharing (or projecting) hide your Teacher Notes by using the Full-Screen button on the top right of the classroom (this pops up the notes as a separate window – close the pop up) and load the Teacher Notes on your smartphone. To load the Teacher Notes on your smartphone, use your smartphone’s browser to login to Off2Class (same login credentials) and you’ll be prompted to ‘track your active classroom’s teacher notes’.

How do I teach online?

Off2Class works well with any videoconference software such as Skype, Google Hangouts, Zoom.us, Go To Meeting or Wiz IQ.

When you launch a lesson be sure to Enroll your students. If you’ve enabled the Class Enrollment Notifications on your profile page, your students will receive an email telling them that class has started with a button that will take them right into your classroom.

Even if you haven’t enabled the email notification, when your students log in to Off2Class they’ll be prompted to ‘Join Lesson’ – green button in the top left of their panel. Once your students have successfully joined your lesson we will notify you by popping open the chat window:

slide2-formatted  getting started

Now it’s time to launch your videoconference video so that you will be able to speak to and see your student. Once you launch your video, just be sure to minimize the video window so that you’ll be able to see Off2Class and the video simultaneously (please instruct your student to do so as well).

If you use a videoconference software that has a link-based joining system (i.e. you press a URL to join the videoconference) such as Zoom.us or Go To Meeting, you can embed your meeting link into your profile page. After you save your meeting link into your profile page, every time you or your students join a classroom you’ll see a purple ‘Start Video’ button in the chat window. When you and your students press this button your videoconference software will launch:

A special note for students joining online lessons from a tablet or mobile device.

Due to mobile operating system restrictions, it is not possible for your students to view Off2Class and a videoconference system simultaneously from a tablet or mobile. If your students would like to join your online lessons from a tablet or mobile you’ll need to use the screen sharing feature of your favorite videoconference system. For a demonstration of this process using Skype click here, using Zoom click here, for Hangouts click here.

Under this screen sharing option, your student is not logged into Off2Class while you are teaching so they won’t be able to interact with the content themselves (e.g. type or use the drawing tool). You will be able to draw, type and use the interactive features on your side of Off2Class. Any adaptations to the content you make will be reflected live, on their side of Off2Class.

Do I need WIFI / an Internet connection if I'm teaching in-person?

We recommend that when teaching in-person (either one-on-one or in a classroom) that you have an active WIFI connection. It’s fine if the connection goes down while you’re teaching, you’ll just need to be connected when you close the classroom and pick a new lesson. It is possible to teach offline, without a WIFI connection, you’ll just need to load the lessons in your browser before leaving home. The lesson content will be loaded but you won’t be able to use all the dynamic features of Off2Class like drawing on the screen, taking notes, enrolling students and sending homework.

Can I use any videoconferencing software?

Yes, you can use any videoconfrence software such as Skype, Google Hangouts, Zoom.us, Wiz IQ and Go To Meeting. After your students join your lessons on Off2Class you can start your videoconference call so that you can hear and see them.

To obtain your meeting link on Zoom.us follow these steps:

1.  Download Zoom.us onto your laptop (free account is fine for one-2-one lessons, for groups you need a Pro account at $10/month)

2. Open the Zoom client and schedule a recurring meeting (you can call it ‘online lessons’)

3. Go to the Meeting tab on your Zoom client and press copy

What kind of teaching equipment do I need?

Off2Class is designed to work on any internet-connected device – from laptops and tablets, to smartphones and Smartboards. There is no special program or application to download, you just need a web browser. That being said, please check that you are running the latest version of your favourite browser. We recommend using Chrome, Firefox or Safari to run Off2Class. Older versions of Internet Explorer are problematic.

Besides a laptop or tablet to teach your lessons, any other teaching equipment requirements would depend on how you plan to teach:

  • Teaching in a classroom? Project your laptop or tablet by using a projector, Smartboard or television (remember you can access your Teacher Notes on your smartphone during lessons).
  • Teaching online? You’ll need a videoconferencing system to see and communicate with your student. We recommend Zoom.us but most videoconferencing software options such as Skype and Google Hangouts will do.
Can I print the lessons?

We’ve taken a modern approach and are paperless. We don’t allow printing the lessons. There’s a number of reasons why we’ve taken this approach, but mostly because we adapt our content when we receive feedback from teachers and students, so we wouldn’t want outdated versions of our lessons flying around. All the awesome features of Off2Class like taking notes on your students, using the drawing tools, tracking your students’ performance and sending homework require you to be using the software.

What kind of ESL lessons do you have?

Our growing ESL lesson plan library covers Grammar, Idioms, Listening, Speaking, Vocabulary, Reading, Business English, Functional Language and IELTS. The ESL lessons are designed to be adaptive meaning you can adapt them to your students’ needs. The ESL lessons are bright and image-heavy and are designed to get your students engaged. We typically include prompts in the Teacher Notes which you can use to expand the corresponding slide if the student is reacting to it well. Of course, you don’t need to teach every slide in order, and you’ll develop your own style for each lesson as you gain experience with them. Lessons are designed to take up a typical class session time (45 minutes to an hour); but of course, this depends on how much you adapt them.

You can find our ESL lessons on our Teacher Tab. You can browse the library or use the search function to find lessons to teach. Whether you’re browsing or using the search function, the level filters (just under the search bar) will help you find a lesson at the appropriate level for your student.

Are the lessons in British or American English?

We believe it is important for English as a Second Language learners to be aware of both British and American spellings and have purposefully included both in our lesson content, with a leaning towards American spellings. We have purposefully avoided using expressions and constructions that are never used in either British or American English, and in cases where we have, we’ve pointed this distinction out in the lesson’s corresponding Teacher Notes.

What if I have feedback on a lesson?

We love teacher feedback on our lesson content and we strive to continuously improve our content based on your feedback. If you have a comment, question or concern on any of our lessons, you can use the green Give Us Feedback button at the bottom of the classroom to let us know. We’ll know what lesson and slide number you were on (so no need to mention it).

What if you're missing a lesson I need?

We are constantly adding new lessons and categories to our ESL lesson plan library. If we’re missing a lesson you need, feel free to send us a message and we’ll see if we can move your request to the front of the queue.

Can I draw on our mark up the lessons?

Yes! You can use our built-in drawing tools (pen at the top right of the classroom) to draw on the screen and mark up the lessons in a variety of different colours. This is a great tool to draw attention to different elements of the lessons whether you are teaching in-person or online. We also have a built-in magnifying glass (next to the pen) that you can use to zoom in on any part of the lesson content. Your students will see your pen markings live, and when you activate the pen, they will also have their own pen that they can use to draw on the lessons.

How does the Placement Test work?

If you are unsure which lessons to teach to your student, you can send them a Placement Test.  Your student will log into Off2Class (with the username/password that you set up for them) and take the assessment. After your student completes the assessment, we’ll then deliver you the results, and for each question that they got wrong (or answered “I don’t know”) we’ll list you the corresponding lesson from our library that deals with that learning point. This learning path will then form your student’s learning plan or ‘individual curriculum’.

Do you have a Whiteboard that I can use while teaching?

Yes! We have a canvas that you can access whenever you are in the Off2Class classroom. Our canvas is where you can upload your own content to Off2Class. On our canvas you can draw, add text and import images and YouTube videos. You can copy and paste large blocks of text into the canvas (use ctrl or command + c to copy your text from the source and ctrl or command + v to paste text into the text tool).

For each lesson on Off2Class you can save a different canvas meaning that every time you teach that lesson your canvas will always be accessible. You can populate your canvas before class or build it live with your students. You can read all about our canvas here.

At the end of your lesson, we’ll automatically send a copy of your canvas to your student (it will be the last page of the student’s lesson summary for that lesson). You can read more about sending your canvas to students here.

Do you have Games or ways to build a Quiz?

Yes! We’ve released two interactive ESL Games. One is called Quiz and follows a Who Wants to be a Millionaire style format and the other is called Game Show and follows a Jeopardy style format.

You can pick question sets that are linked back to our lesson library and you can easily access our lessons directly from within the corresponding question sets.

You can use the games as quizzes or informal assessments for your students and even assign them to your students to complete on their own time! Read more about our ESL games here.

Where are my student's placement test results? How do students see the results?

Once your student completes a Placement Test you can open up their Placement Test results from your student’s profile page (which you can access from you Student Management Tab). Your student’s results will be in the first row of the lesson history table:

formatted

If your students want to see their Placement Test results you can give them access to the results. Press the blue unlock symbol next to their results in their lesson history table. When your students log in to Off2Class they will be able to access their results from their Recently Completed Homework list:

Which proficiency levels do you use on the Placement Test?

When your students sit our placement test we will produce their level based on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). This is one of the most commonly used rubrics for assigning proficiency levels to language learners (globally). We include the description of your student’s proficiency level directly in their results, but you can find the entire set of descriptions posted here. The proficiency levels can roughly be equated to: A1 = beginner, A2 = elementary, B1 = pre-intermediate, B2 = intermediate, C1 = upper-intermediate, C2 = advanced.

Can I teach groups or multiple students at the same time?

If you are teaching more than one student at the same time you can Enroll as many students as you’d like into any one classroom. Once you launch a lesson, use the orange “Enroll Students” button to Enroll all of your students for your session. We’ll record that each student was present in their corresponding lesson history tables and at the end of the lesson we’ll ask you if you want to send the lesson’s homework to your group of students.

Do you have listening activities?

Yes! Each of our Listening Activities contain graded audio recordings of native English speakers. Each recording is paired with listening for specific information and comprehension questions. On the slides which contain audio recordings (that you’ll need to play for your students), you’ll see audio controls above the slides.

The sound will play for your students on their side of Off2Class.

How do prospective students work?

If you’d like to send the placement test to a prospective student (i.e. a student for which you’re not sure will take lessons with you), please select ‘prospective student’ when assigning the test.

formatted

By using the prospective student button, you’ll send the placement test and set up the student account in Off2Class in one step.

Also, we’ll let you set up more prospective students than your student account quota (as determined by your account type). After you reach your student quota, prospective students will only be able to take the placement test on Off2Class. Likewise, on Off2Class you’ll only be able to receive the placement test results from the student.

If you’d like to teach one of your prospective students on Off2Class – set the account to active, on their ‘student info & settings’.

What age group are your lessons designed for?

The aim of Off2Class’ lesson content is adolescent and above (adults) and not young learners. That being said, the resources are designed to be adaptive, and we do have teachers that adapt our content for learners as young as 6 years old!

We plan to add young learners focused content in the future and better yet, the ability for you to edit and adapt our content for your students.

Why can't I see Off2Class while teaching online?

When you launch your videoconference system you need to minimize the video window in order to see Off2Class and your video simultaneously. Please also ask your student to do so.

On a Mac your minimize button is a yellow button in the top left of your videoconference window:

On Windows your minimize button is a dash in the top right of your videoconference window:

Why can't my student see Off2Class during my online lessons?

If your student has joined your lesson from a laptop, they likely aren’t able to see Off2Class (behind their videoconference window) because they have not minimized the videoconference window. Ask them to do so:

On a Mac the minimize button is a yellow button in the top left of the videoconference window:

On Windows the minimize button is a dash in the top right of the videoconference window:

If your student has joined your lessons from a tablet or mobile, due to mobile operating system restrictions, it is not possible for them to view Off2Class and a videoconference window simultaneously. If your student would like to join your online lessons from a tablet or mobile you’ll need to use the screen sharing feature of your favorite videoconference system.

How do I notify my students about lessons?

We don’t currently have a scheduling or calendar software integrated into Off2Class but we will notify your students by email that class has started. When you launch a lesson be sure to Enroll your students (we’ll prompt you to do so). If you’ve enabled the Class Enrollment Notifications on your profile page, your students will receive an email telling them that class has started with a button that will take them right into your classroom.

Managing Students

Why do I need to Add Students?

The powerful features of Off2Class can only be accessed after you Add Students on your Student Management Tab. After Adding Students you’ll be able to Enroll Students to each lesson you teach (we’ll prompt you every time you launch a lesson). This allows your students to join your lessons in real-time and interact with the content from their own side of Off2Class.

Adding students will also allow you to send your students homework and lesson summaries after each lesson, take notes on their performance and track their progress. Your students will log in to Off2Class to complete homework and review lesson summaries between your lessons with them. Finally, you’ll need to Add Students in order to send our Placement Test to them. They need a username/password to log in to Off2Class to complete the test!

Why do I need to Enroll Students?

Every time you launch a lesson we’ll prompt you to Enroll Students. By Enrolling your students they will be able to join your lessons in real-time and interact with the content from their own side of Off2Class. In addition, you’ll be able to send them lesson summaries and homework assignments for each lesson, take notes on their performance and track their progress.

Will you ever email my students?

When you Add Students to Off2Class you pick a nickname and password and add their email address. Don’t worry, we will never send your students emails (the exception is if you choose to use homework notifications) and we will never send them anything promotional. We don’t even send them their log in credentials. We send them to you by email, and it’s your choice of how you want to share them with your students.

How do I track my students' progress?

By Adding Students on your Student Management Tab, and Enrolling them when you teach lessons (we’ll prompt you every time you launch a lesson) Off2Class has several tools to track your students’ progress and save information on them:

  • We’ll automatically save a record of each lesson in your Student Management Tab. When you click on a student’s name, you’ll be able to see the notes you’ve saved about your student and a table that lists their lesson history and allows you to assign, open and manage homework assignments.

formatted1

  • In the classroom, use the yellow Take Notes button, to save information on your students’ performance in the lesson. We’ll save the notes in your Student Management Tab and the next time you Enroll your student to a classroom we’ll pop up the notes as a reminder.

students' progress

  • If you want to save an important piece of information about your student that you’d like to be reminded about (such as favourite hobbies, or common grammar errors), use the “sticky” feature to Pin any individual note. By pressing the Pin icon (on any note), that note will appear first (and in blue) in your set of student notes.

How does deactivating students work?

If you have a student that you won’t be teaching for some time, but don’t want to delete their account information and lesson/homework history, you can pause them by deactivating them. On your Student Management Tab click on the relevant student’s name and then click on the Student Info & Settings link. By making the student inactive, they won’t count towards your total student count, but you won’t be able to re-activate them for 20 days.

What does my student see in Off2Class?

If you’d like to see what your student sees when they log in to Off2Class, go to your Student Management Tab and click the link (under their name/avatar) that says “Log in as your Student”. You’ll be taken into their account and you’ll be able to see all the functionality of Off2Class as if you were logged in as them. This is very useful if you want to walk them through a homework assignment or show them around the site.

How can I translate Off2Class for my Students?

We know that many beginner ESL students don’t have a strong enough command of English to be able to access Off2Class in English.

We offer a number of different different languages for you to translate your student’s interface on Off2Class. When you translate the student interface of Off2Class for your students, all buttons, headings, labels, login pages and email notifications will be translated into their native language. You can read more about translating the student interface of Off2Class here.

Do you issue student certificates?

Teachers that have opted for our ‘Pro’ option are able to print their own branded certificates for their students. These certificates are linked back to their students’ placement test results. You can read all about our certificate system here.

Assigning Homework

How do I assign homework?

When teaching lessons, be sure to Enroll the student you are teaching that day (when we prompt you). If you Enroll your students, at the end of the lesson we will ask you if you want to assign them the corresponding homework and will provide them with an email notification of the assignment. We will also send them a lesson summary of the lesson you just taught them.

If you don’t want to use email notifications to assign homework, you can assign it after the lesson on your Student Management Tab from the Homework Column of the lesson table.

What if my students don't have computers?

Off2Class homework assignments and lesson summaries work on all internet connected devices including smartphones. Your students can log in to Off2Class from whatever internet connected devices they have access to, in order to complete their homework and review their lesson summaries.

How do I review a student's homework

After your student has submitted homework, you can launch and review it from your Student Management Tab from the Homework Column of the lesson history table.

formatted

Once you launch it, you’ll open the Homework Classroom, which displays your student’s answers on the right and the answer key on the left. The Homework Classroom is great to launch with your student during your next lesson together.

You can leave feedback for your student on any answer in the Homework Classroom by using the notepad on the right of the classroom and dropping it on an answer. If you want to leave general feedback to your student (not linked to a question) you can drop the notepad at the bottom of the Homework Classroom (we provide a space for you).

review-homework

When you close the Homework Classroom, we’ll ask you if you want to mark the homework assignment as “Reviewed” or “Not Reviewed”. If you mark the assignment as “Reviewed”, we’ll provide your student with a copy of the answer key when they open up the completed assignment from their panel (after logging in to Off2Class).

If you’d like to provide your student with a notification after you’ve Reviewed their homework assignments you can enable Homework Reviewed Notifications on your Profile Tab.

Can I print the homework?

We’ve taken a modern approach and are going paperless. We don’t allow printing the homework. There’s a number of reasons why we’ve taken this approach, but mostly because we adapt our content when we receive feedback from teachers and students, so we wouldn’t want outdated versions of our homework flying around. In addition, by assigning, receiving and reviewing homework assignments digitally you are able to provide feedback to your students in real-time and greatly increase your efficiency as a teacher.

How do I re-assign homework?

If your student mistakenly submits homework to you (before they finish it) or you wish to re-assign or resend homework that has already been completely, you can re-assign homework.

Simply launch the lesson that you’d like to re-assign homework for from our lesson library and Enroll the student you’d like to re-assign the homework for. Press the purple “close the classroom” button and we’ll ask you if you’d like to send the homework to your student.

Your student will have a new copy of the homework assignment posted to them. When you open up their homework from the Homework Column of the lesson table on your Student Management Tab you’ll now see both version of their homework, their “current version” as well as any “archived versions”.

You can upgrade to a new subscription at any time. Unused credit from your existing subscription is subtracted from the cost of your new subscription. Of course, if you need fewer Active Student Accounts, you can downgrade your plan at any time.

Do you automatically renew subscriptions? What about cancellations?

Yes, all subscriptions on Off2Class automatically renew, but you can cancel up to the day before your next billing date and you won’t be billed again. You will retain access to the site until your current subscription expires. You can view your next billing date on your account page.

What if I need a subscription with more than 15 Active Student Accounts?

We’d be happy to customize a high-use plan for you! Get in contact with us here to get set up.

Will you ever contact or email my students?

We will never send your students promotional or marketing material. Never. You have the choice to send email notifications to students to alert them to class enrolments and homework assignments. If your students don’t have an email address, you can set their accounts up without an email address. Just use a ‘dummy’ address that will allow them to log in to their accounts (but they obviously won’t receive email notifications!).

Do I need to pay 1 year up front?

No. If you don’t want to commit to a year, just select a monthly subscription. Your payment source will be billed on each one-month anniversary of the day you first purchased the subscription.

How does the free trial work?

All new Teachers have access to Off2Class for 30 days. No credit card required. Only one free trial is allowed per Teacher and the free trial begins after setting up an account. You can send our Placement Test 3 times and you can still send tests after the end of the free trial. Access to our Games is unlimited and does not expire after 30 days.

What currency do you use for payments?

All payments are in USD($).

Is it safe to use my card on your site?

Absolutely. We don’t store your card details on our site. We use a payment processor called Stripe. They are PCI compliant and are used by some of the best-known brands in the world such as The Guardian, Target, Yelp and Pinterest.

What payment methods do you accept?

We accept VISA, American Express or MasterCard, Debit and Credit cards, from any country. If your card fails when making a purchase on our site, it’s best to call your bank and ask them why they’ve blocked a payment from Off2Class. If you ask your bank to ‘whitelist’ Off2Class, this resolves 90% of card issues.

What should I do if my card doesn't work on your website?

If your card is rejected when making a payment on Off2Class, please call your bank. The number is usually on the back of the card and ask them why they’ve denied a payment to Off2Class. If you ask your bank to ‘whitelist’ Off2Class, this resolves 90% of card issues.

Do you accept PayPal?

We can organize a payment through PayPal for a yearly subscription. Get in contact here to set this up.

What are Set-Up Options?

There are three Set-Up Options on Off2Class that can be added to any subscription: Basic, Professional and Business.

By default, all packages are on a Basic Set-Up which adds no additional cost to your subscription.

If you opt for a Professional Set-Up, you’ll be able to place your logo on the platform interfaces, homework assignments, placement tests, your own unique login pages and your own printable student achievement certificates.

A Business Set-Up includes all elements of the Professional Set-Up as well as the ability to use your own domain (rather than Off2Class.com), placement of your logo on the lesson content and delivery of student notifications from a generic address (rather than from @off2class.com).

You can use our demo tool to visualize the differences in the Set-Up Options.

How does the Set-Up fee work?

Set-Up fees are a one-time payment (unlike Subscriptions, which are paid monthly or yearly). The features included in the premium Set-Up packages do not expire. For example, if you opt for a Business Set-Up, then cancel your subscription and return a year later, your logo will still appear on the platform, and you can continue to run Off2Class on your own domain when you purchase your new subscription.

Can I change my Set-Up Option after selecting one?

You cannot downgrade your Set-Up Option (e.g. from Professional to Basic), but you can upgrade your Set-Up Option at any time (e.g. from Professional to Business). In such an instance, the fee you paid for the Professional Set-Up is subtracted from the cost of the Business Set-Up.

Can my logo or domain change after I opt for a premium Set-Up Option?

Yes! Once you purchase a Set-Up Option, you can change your logo and domain on your account Set-Up page. For the domain, you need to re-install the set-up files to your server (to reflect the new domain).

What size should my logo be for the premium Set-Up Options?

The maximum pane size for the logo is 260 pixels width x 80 pixels height. For clarity and prominence, ensure your logo take up as much of the space as possible. For best effect, we recommend using a transparent logo. If you don’t have a transparent logo, try a free converter.

What technical requirements are needed to use my own domain? What’s involved in setting up?

You need a Linux server which supports PHP + Apache with mod_rewrite support; most basic hosting services are set up this way. You need to upload 2 files to your server. It’s a simple task, though you may require support from your hosting provider or a server-side developer.

Do you provide installation services if I want to use my own domain?

We provide detailed instructions though we cannot provide technical support to load the 2 files to your server. For this reason, we recommend having some technical support from your hosting provider or a server-side developer.

Why am I being told I need to wait to activate or deactivate a student?

You need to wait 20 days between changing a student’s activation or deactivation status.

For example, if you activate a student today (who was previously inactive) you’ll need to wait another 20 days to deactivate this student. If you cannot wait 20 days we would suggest not changing your student’s status and consider upgrading your subscription to accommodate more Active Student Accounts.
